Meet the committee- Allie
Monday 5 October 2015
How long have you been a member of show choir?
I've now been a member for two years, although I wish I'd joined in my first year!
Favourite song we’ve ever performed?
Man in the mirror... when it went well!
Best memory from your time at show choir
My best memory is probably performing at a wedding at the end of my second year. It was Disney themed and it was just so amazing to perform on someone's special day!
When and why did you start to sing?
I started singing when I was six and joined my church choir called 'Die Kichererbsen', which basically means 'The chickpeas'. I wasn't a good singer at all but I really enjoyed singing with people and I've just kept doing it since then!
Musical guilty pleasure
Anything country, especially the Nashville soundtrack...
If you could choose a song for us to perform, what would it be?
Flashlight from Pitch Perfect
Glee or Pitch Perfect?
Definitely Pitch Perfect- it's aca-awesome!
Hobbies outside of show choir:
Pole fitness and running my blog.
What’s your favourite musical?
Chicago! I saw it on Broadway once and it was absolutely incredible!
Your top tip for freshers:
Join a society (or two!). Societies are definitely where you meet the most people and it's easy to connect because you already have something in common!

How long have you been a member of show choir?
This is my

Bridge over Troubled
Water or Something Inside so Strong
Best memory from your time at show choir
The whole
competition experience! All the rehearsals, the actual day, performing with
everyone and of course the after party
When and why did you start to sing?
I did a solo at school
when I was about eleven and just carried on singing from there really, joined
my school choir and then started having singing lessons
Musical guilty pleasure:
Anything from Glee
If you could choose a song for us to perform, what would it
be?
I would love to do something from Wicked
Glee or Pitch Perfect?
Both?
What’s your favourite musical?
Billy Elliot or Cats
Your top tip for freshers:
Try out lots of societies as it
gives you a chance to make so many new friends and do something you might not
have tried before, and beware of freshers flu!

How long have you
been a member of show choir?
I’ve now been in Show Choir since 2011, which would make this my 5th year as a member (Ok, I took a year out because I lived in Spain for my Year Abroad) but I still think that classifies me as the longest standing member!

Favourite song we’ve
ever performed?
Oh my, you can’t ask me that question! Ok I’m going to
ignore the question and give you my top three:
1. Africa - Toto
2. Rolling in the Deep - Adele
3. The Greatest day – Take That
These are in no specific order, they were just both fun and
emotional for me!
Best memory from your
time at show choir
This one is tough. I think it must have been one of many
impromptu moments when we all started singing a song all together at random
(probably Bohemian Rhapsody) and everyone just joined in! And then obviously
the people, you always meet great people.
When and why did you
start to sing?
I started seriously singing when I was 11. I was actually
forced into joining the junior choir by my music teacher at school and, well, I
never stopped I guess.
Musical guilty
pleasure
Michael Bublè, definitely!
If you could choose a
song for us to perform, what would it be?
Certainly something by Bastille! – Maybe “Of the Night”
Glee or Pitch
Perfect?
Glee. No match.
Hobbies outside of
show choir:
I’m in the University Volleyball team, so Volleyball is
definitely my other big hobby.
What’s your favourite
musical?
Jesus Christ Superstar followed by Les Misérables, I know cliché!
Your top tip for
freshers:
“Have fun this year, the next and the one after because,
well, three years fly by”.
Year Round Up

The academic year 2014/15 was an exciting time for us. Following on from our win in the national Master's of Show Choir competition (watch our performance here) we were incredibly excited to make it a great year and improve as much as we could. Having won the Student Award for Most Improved Society we also wanted to keep up the positive development and make Show Choir the best society it could be!
We started off the year with early auditions, as we had a gig booked very shortly after Fresher's Week and had to get practising! After auditions we were joined by many incredibly talented new singers and started preparing for our performance on the Societies Stage at Sussex Festival, an all day music event on campus put on by Sussex Records. We managed to learn several songs in just two weeks (that's two rehearsals!) and had a great time performing at the festival.
Throughout the year we performed at many more gigs, on and off campus, including performances at the Etsy pop-up store in Brighton, the annual SMuTS Christmas cabaret, Sussex Live, and many more. We also put on two of our own gigs, where we performed all the songs we had learned and also gave our talented members the opportunity to perform solo or in groups.
This year we sang popular songs such as Empire State of Mind, Happy and Over the Rainbow and also brought back the Show Choir classic Africa by Toto, which was always well received.
Obviously we didn't neglect the social side of being in a society, so we put on several socials, meals, a themed quiz and even a trip to karaoke for our members! It was great to see many new friendships forming and all those activities outside of rehearsals are what really makes us a great group.
Unfortunately we could not defend our title as Masters of Show Choir this year, as the competition was fierce and everyone put on an incredible show. We did however learn a lot from competing again and we will certainly be back and better than ever this year!
All in all we had an incredible year and we are looking forward to welcoming lots of new members soon and to start rehearsing new songs for the coming year! If you're thinking of joining make sure you find us at Fresher's Fair on the 16th September and follow us on facebook and twitter for updates on auditions.
